Not so with an underdrive pulley, according to research I did a few years back. It explained that the pulley actually reduced wear and tear on some parts because they are now rotating more slowly, and, in fact, resulted in their lasting longer, as well as getting a little extra mileage.

Anyone who knows otherwise please post, but that makes sense to me.
